Step-by-Step Guide for AmazonSimpleAdmin

I wrote a step-by-step guide for my WordPress plugin AmazonSimpleAdmin. You can find the newest version on top of the documentation page.

AmazonSimpleAdmin version 0.9.9.1 released

Today I released a new version of AmazonSimpleAdmin. Due to some trouble with the svn commit I skipped some version numbers, but you should not care about that.

The new version has some great new features. It supports 2 new parameters for the [asa_collection] tag: “items” and “type”.
“items=2″ for example lets you limit the collection items to be displayed. type supports “random”, so “type=random” shows randomly selected collection items.
By default the latest added item will be displayed first.

You may combine the two parameters, separated by comma, like: [asa_collection items=2, type=random]Products01[/asa_collection]
If you want to use a template use it like this: [asa_collection book, items=2, type=random]my_fav_games[/asa_collection]

The following would randomly display two items of my collection “my_fav_games”:

[asa_collection items=2, type=random]my_fav_games[/asa_collection]

Furthermore this version brings you some new template placeholders:

AmazonSimpleAdmin version 0.9.7 released

Today I committed version 0.9.7 of my wordpress plugin AmazonSimpleAdmin to the wordpress plugin repository. This update fixes the broken customer reviews. They did not work any more after Amazon did some changes to their webservice API in early November. I am glad that I found a way to seamlessly make the reviews work again with the known placeholders.

Because the reviews images get grabbed from the html code of a review summary page, which is an additional background request, I highly recommed to activate the cache of the plugin.

I added two new placeholders in this version: LowestOfferFormattedPrice (shows the fully formatted price with currency and price like “EUR 4,99″) and RatingStarsSrc (contains the URL to the review stars image)

I tested the new version on Mac OS and Windows and I hope it works for you all. Please share your experience with my plugin. Send me mail to info@NOSPAM_ichdigital.de (delete NOSPAM_) or write a comment.

Working on Customer Review Fix

I am working on an update for my plugin to fix the customer reviews, which do not not show up anymore in the current version. This is because there have been changes to the Amazon Webservice API in November. Besides I will fix some other minor issues for making AmazonSimplePlugin suitable for the current WordPress release.

AmazonSimpleAdmin is a wordpress plugin that lets you easily integrate Amazon products into your wordpress pages.

By using the template feature, you can present the products in different styles on different pages, all by typing simple BBCode tags.

Installation

Just unpack the “amazonsimpleadmin” folder into your plugins directory and activate it on your wordpress plugins page. Then you will have the option “AmazonSimpleAdmin” on your wordpress options page.

This is the first public version. I have used this plugin for several weeks now and it works fine so far. If you find any bugs please send me an e-mail (info@NOSPAM_ichdigital.de, remove the NOSPAM_) or use the comments. Please also contact me for feature requests and ideas how to improve this plugin. Any other reactions are welcome too of course.

    If asa is installed correctly, this will work!

    matt, the code seems to do that already. It’s just not enabled for our affiliate code. Make sure you give Timo a donation before you start changing the code.

    Also the plugin needs work done to it to make it compatablite with the chnages in the amazon API coming this august. (link)

    Ja, ich werde das Plugin demnächst dahingehend updaten, dass es auch nach dem 15.8. weiterhin funktionieren wird. Evtl. sind dafür dann einige Einstellungen in den Optionen nötig, aber das sollte es auch sein.

    Eine andere Frage hab ich dann auch noch: Füge ich ein Produkt ein, so kann dieses nicht über die Suchfunktion gefunden werden, auch in der Meta-Beschreibung taucht nur die ASIN auf. Gibt’s da einen einfachen Weg das Problem zu lösen?

    I noticed this library is using Zend_Crypt_RSA, which requires ext/openssl be installed. Unfortunately, my host doesn’t have it installed nor is it likely to any time soon. I’d get a new host if I could, but alas, I am not.

    In light of this, maybe the ext/openssl dependency ought to be removed? Zend_Crypt_RSA could be replaced with phpseclib’s Crypt_RSA, for example:

    In den Beispielen oben steht, daß sich diese auf den deuteschen Amazon Store beziehen. Die Textschnipsel in den vom Plugin verwendeten Boxen sind allerdings englisch (Price …, 141 customer reviews, 50 used & new available from…)
    Das wird deutsche Besucher erstmal irritieren. Kann ich die Texte auch irgendwie ins deutsche übersetzen und anzeigen lassen?

      das liegt am default Template, das ich mit dem Plugin ausliefere. Das ist in englisch und wird auch hier als Demo verwendet. Du kannst die englischen Worte beliebig in der Template-Datei ändern. Du findest sie im Pluginverzeichnis unter: tpl/default.htm

Amazon Links mit Text: Anstatt der Produktnummer den Produktlink mit Text. Bilde mir ein, dass eine sprechende URL besser ‘ankommt’ – kann aber auch nur gefühlt so sein. 2. Ggf. eine Verknüpfung mit PrettyLinks -> ähnlich dem vorherigen, dass man den Link verschleiert, bzw. eben diese selbst benennen kann, wirkt subjektiv ansprechender… Aber wie gesagt, das Plugin ist super! Ach ja, noch ein Tipp – vor einem Update sollte man die lokalisierten templates sichern, sonst muss man erstmal wieder kurz im Code basteln… VG Heiko

      vielen Dank für deine Anregungen. Um das Plugin weiter zu optimieren, brauche ich immer Feedback von den Usern, das nehme ich auch alles ernst. Ich denke auch über eine Pro-Version nach. Wenn es mal so weit sein sollte, wird sie sicherlich deutlich günstiger sein! ;-) Würde mich also freuen, wenn du meinem Plugin bis dahin treu bleibst ;-)
      Der Tipp mit den Templates ist gut. Ich überlege mir mal was, evtl. automatische Backups anlegen oder so…

      I’ve added a new comment feature to the current development version. If you want to test it, you just have to download this file (AsaCore.php):
      http://svn.wp-plugins.org/amazonsimpleadmin/trunk/AsaCore.php
      and replace it in your amazonsimpleadmin plugin directory on your webserver (make a copy of the old file before).

      Then you can write a comment in your post like this:
      [asa comment="Hello world, this is my custom comment"]4781605524[/asa]
      And you have to set the placeholder {$Comment} in your template file where you want to show the comment.
